FACTSHEET: GRANDPARENTS' DAY
A day to pay tribute to grandparents
While Singaporeans have taken to Fathers' Day and Mothers' Day, Grandparents' Day is
not a widely celebrated occasion. To encourage the public to give grandparents their
due recognition, the Council has stepped up efforts to raise public awareness and
participation in Grandparents' Day.
Happening on Sunday, 25 November, this year's Grandparents' Day will be celebrated in
a much bigger way, with Council for Third Age reaching out to the young, as well as
enlisting the support of hospitality and F&B outlets. To top off the day's activities, a walk
for the young and old will also be organized.
“My Grandparents and I” primary school art competition
The many ways that grandparents contribute to the family often go unnoticed. So the
Council has organised a national primary school drawing competition in mid September
to encourage children to reflect on their relationships with their grandparents, and to
depict their special moments with them in art.
A total of 26 prizes will be awarded through 2 categories - Primary 1 to 3 and Primary 4
to 6. The six best entries will be produced as postcards, which will then be distributed to
participating schools in the week leading up to Grandparents' Day.
Message to grandparents
School children will be encouraged to use and address these postcards to their
grandparents to express their love and appreciation for them.
Special meals for grandparents
As the saying goes, the family that eats together stays together, but given the pace of
modern life, there are rarely such opportunities for bonding. As such, the Council is
working with selected hotels and F&B outlets to offer or launch food promotions on
Grandparents' Day for families to enjoy a special meal together.
Take that Gentle Walk
Families can take part in a gentle and scenic 1km walk from Raffles Place, along the
Singapore River - the very pulse and heartbeat of Singapore in its early days - to Elgin
Bridge - the first bridge to be built across the Singapore River - before ending at the
Asian Civilisations Museum at Empress Place
