November 19, 2008, Singapore – More than 4,000 people will be celebrating Grandparents’ Day on 23 November 2008 with a morning of family fun, starting with a walk from Esplanade Park and culminating in a host of activities for all the family at Singapore Flyer.

Guest-of-Honour for the event, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, Mr Wong Kan Seng, will flag off the walk at 9am.

The Grandparents’ Day Walk is organised by Council for Third Age (C3A) to recognise grandparents for their contribution to family and society, and to promote bonding, respect and understanding between generations.

“We want everyone to use Grandparents’ Day to remind ourselves of the very important role that grandparents play in society. They help ensure that the younger generations grow up safe and sound by giving them guidance and advice, and imparting to them good values. And with so many families where both parents work, the presence of grandparents in charge at home gives parents immeasurable peace of mind,”  said Chairman for Council for Third Age, Mr Gerard Ee.

At Grandparents’ Day Walk, participants will be treated to a host of fun family activities for all to enjoy, including live performances, concessionary rides on the Singapore Flyer, face painting, games and contests. They will also be among the first to catch “FaBulouS”, a new workout routine for seniors, and Fitto Fun, a computer game for young and old that helps train hand-eye coordination.

Grandparents’ Day Walk highlights:

    • Concessionary rides on the Singapore Flyer
With every purchase of 2 full-priced tickets, participants can receive a free ticket for a grandparent to take a ride on the Flyer. Subsequent purchases up to a maximum of 4 flight tickets will receive 10% off the usual ticket prices. These concessionary rates are valid on 23 November and 30 November 2008.

    • 3-Generation Lookalike Contest
Three generations of the same family can proudly show off their unique family traits

    • Best Dressed contest
Participants with colourful outfits can have their pictures taken for the contest. Winners will be notified after the Walk.

    • Performances
Live band performances, stilt walkers and balloon sculptors will entertain the crowd after the Walk.

    • Retail tie-ups
Participants will be offered special deals at Pan Pacific Singapore, Wildlife Reserve, Explore Singapore! 2008, Esplanade Mall, Suntec City Mall and Downtown East from 23 November – 22 December 2008.

    • “FaBulouS”
A new workout routine by the Health Promotion Board which uses a theraband. The specially choreographed routine aims to encourage older adults to engage in activities that promote “Flexibility”, “Balance” and “Strength”.

    • Fitto Fun
    >60 Design Centre, The National Design Centre for Ageing, will officially unveil Fitto Fun, an elderly-friendly game that helps foster intergenerational bonding and communication. Fitto Fun is also an educational tool that provides interesting information on prudent saving, healthy living as well as keeping fit.

Grandparents’ Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of November each year. It is one of the key events in the four month-long Active Ageing Festival, an initiative by Council for Third Age to provide seniors with choices and opportunities to adopt active lifestyles. The Festival included the Active Ageing Carnival, Active Ageing Roadshows - which brought the message of active ageing to the heartlands – and the Active Agers Awards.

Most importantly, they are singled out because they possess great enthusiasm to share, inspire and motivate the people around them – a criterion that sets this year's awards apart from the preceding years'.
